GENERAL CASTLE LIFE
Inside of castle life there were social classes. The higher in rank that you were, the closer you lived to the castle. For example the samurai class lived closest to the castle. The merchants and artisans all lived in designated areas that weren’t very close to the castle because they were lower in class. Part of the main castle life also included entertainment. Anything that had to do with entertainment was on the outskirts of the town because it was the least important area to defend if they were attacked. Some things that people did for entertainment were, recite poetry, and drink together. Before the time of the Tokugawa Shogunate, the lady of the castle was given a comfortable apartment to live in. Once the Shogunate began the lord’s family was kept in Edo like they were hostages. (Edo Period)
