ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES
There are many recurring features of Japanese castles. They typically have polygonal walls, and originally the main construction material was wood, however most castles are built out of stone or granite. They had a curved batter to resist earthquakes. They were surrounded by a ditch or moat, and had lookout towers or keeps made of timber with prominent tiled roofs. There were three rings of defense surrounding the castle to keep enemies out (more info on protection on “protection” page). More defense features include castle towers and guard towers. All aspects served a military purpose although they were decorative and elegant. Palaces were also built inside the walls often times. (Edo Period)
