HIMEJI CASTLE- "WHITE HERON CASTLE"
Himeji Castle supposedly has the most beautiful main keep in Japan. Toyotomi Hideyoshi originally built a small castle on the site, but then an ally of Tokugawa at the battle of Sekigahara was awarded the province (which is called Harima) for his services at the battle of Sekigahara. The ally, Ikeda Terumasa rebuilt the main keep in the way that it is known today. Himeji Castle’s nickname is shirasagi-jo, which means “white heron castle,” because main keep has 3 small towers that resemble a white heron.
